Food and Clothing

Deuteronomy 10:18-19

He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.
So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

How often do we consider food and clothing as a demonstration of God’s love? We often take many things for granted unless we lose them. He shows us His love every day in the little things, even in non-essential things. In fact, it is sometimes easier to appreciate His love in non-essentials – added blessings that we don’t really need but show us that He (and others) care for us.

However, the steadfastness of God’s love is demonstrated by meeting our most essential needs. “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:8). We are exhorted to love as He has loved us. We were once aliens to God’s kingdom and we now represent Christ as ambassadors. Should we not love those who do not yet belong to Him as He loved us – living a sacrificial life and providing for their essential needs – food, clothing, and the gospel of salvation?
