Life and Light

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:4)

In the new Jerusalem there will be no night because God will illuminate His people. God is Light. Jesus also said, “You are the light of the world.” So we too are to be light. What is this light? According to the verse above, the life is the light.

Jesus shone as a light. The divine life in His inner being shone forth as a light. This divine life of holiness, power, authority, truth, and love, as well as other divine qualities, shone forth as a beacon as He walked among us.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5)

For us to be the light of the world, we need this divine life within us. Through repentance and forgiveness, we are born again in spirit by the Holy Spirit.Jesus breathes on us (John 20:22) and we receive the Spirit in much the same way that God breathed the breath of life into Adam and he became a living creature (Genesis 2:7). Darkness has no power over the light. It is only the absence of light and can only be achieved when the light is blocked out or extinguished.

Did you know that even our natural bodies emit light? The body heat we give off is actually a form of light in the infrared. It’s not visible but an IR camera can detect if we are alive by the light we shine. Although it’s not very attractive, here is a self-portrait that demonstrates I’m alive.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

This divine life within us manifests itself before others through our lives, our attitudes, our decisions. This is our glory – to radiate the love and truth of Christ even as Jesus did. As this life of Christ in us shines on the works we do, God is glorified.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
